Organophosphonate functional interfaces: A new molecular architecture for semiconductor nanoscale devices

The most recent developments in microelectronics, energy conversion, and sensing device design are tied very closely to our ability to selectively modify well-defined surfaces by chemical means. In particular, in the last years the passivation and functionalization of semiconductor surfaces have become a target for the realization of novel devices. Our research focusses on the development of new hybrid systems where molecular and electronic control of the structure is key. Our work is based on the application of organophosphonate chemistry1 for covalent surface modification of emerging carbon semiconductor substrates, like silicon carbide, diamond, and graphene, but also more exotic materials like gallium nitride. The applicability of organophosphonate chemistry is further investigated with respect to the generation of organized monolayers on silicon/silicon oxide acting as supports for 2-D materials. Finally, we focus on the optimization of nanodevices, in particular related to applications in biosensing and photocatalysis.
